Downloaded video won’t play or shows no picture? How to fix it

If a downloaded video plays sound but shows no picture, stays black, or will not open at all, the file is rarely damaged. Usually it is in a video format your device or app cannot decode.

Why it happens

Platforms keep each video in several formats. The sharpest copy often uses a newer one: H.265 (also called HEVC) on TikTok, or VP9 in a WebM file on YouTube. Newer formats look better at the same file size, but not every device can play them.

Where each format fails

The fix: download the compatible copy

Paste the link again, open “Change format” and choose “Most compatible”. That copy is an MP4 file in the H.264 format, which plays on practically every phone, computer, TV and editing app. It can be a little less sharp, or a little larger, than the newest format.

On iPhone, iPad and Mac, Nabfox already selects this copy whenever the sharpest one would not play there.

If you would rather keep the file you have

On a computer, a free player such as VLC plays all of these formats. On Windows, the HEVC Video Extensions, a small paid add-on in the Microsoft Store, let the built-in apps play H.265.

Picture but no sound

Check the volume first, and make sure the device is not in silent mode. If the video is silent everywhere, the original post may have no sound at all: a GIF on X, for example, is stored without any.
